Understanding Fence Anatomy and Spacing Intervals
To prevent confusion during the planning phase, it is crucial to understand the different vertical supports and their correct spacing intervals. A secure perimeter consists of more than just a single type of post:
- Straining Posts: These are the heavy duty timber or steel anchors where the fence is actually tensioned. They are placed at every corner, at gates, and at maximum intervals of 100 to 200 metres on straight runs. Because they bear the massive pulling force of the tensioned wire, straining posts must always be supported by diagonal stays (braces) that are anchored securely into the ground.
- Standards (Y, K, or I Standards): These are the normal, intermediate steel posts driven into the ground between your straining posts to hold the wires at the correct height. For a standard boundary, these standards are typically spaced 10 metres apart.
- Droppers: These are the rigid vertical spacers suspended on the wires between the standards to maintain wire spacing and prevent animals from pushing through. A dropper is typically installed every 1 metre along the fence line.
Aligning the Perimeter Over Uneven Terrain
A secure perimeter must follow a perfectly straight line between straining posts. This is simple on flat ground, but when your end posts are separated by a blind rise or hill, establishing a true line requires a staging method.
Two team members need to position themselves between the end points. By visually aligning each other with the opposite destination posts, they can incrementally adjust their standing positions until a true straight line is formed over the obscured terrain. These exact spots are then staked to ensure your Y standards are planted accurately.
Managing Wire Tension Properly
A boundary is only as secure as its slackest point. Always stretch the bottom wire first to act as a physical level guide for planting your intermediate standards. Once the bottom wire is true, you can begin tensioning the top and inner strands.
When applying tension, avoid the temptation to over tighten. South African winter nights cause steel to contract, and over tightened wires will quickly snap under the thermal pressure. An optimal working stress is 1.5 kN per wire, and tension should never exceed 2.0 kN. You can test this deflection using a simple field tool made from a wooden board and a spring balance. Always use a heavy duty wire strainer with knurled wheel grippers when tensioning to prevent damaging the steel.
Installing Woven Wire Solutions
For woven mesh boundaries such as diamond mesh, field fence and wire netting, the entire height of the fence must be tensioned simultaneously. To prevent uneven pulling and distortion, limit your straining post intervals to a maximum of 200 metres.
Attach a solid tension bar across the end of the mesh and use multiple heavy duty strainers to pull the entire roll tight. You will know the tension is correct when the mesh feels springy to the touch and the horizontal crimping curves are exactly half straightened out.
Navigating Natural Landscape Contours
Not every boundary follows a straight line. When navigating landscape contours, you must adjust the spacing between your standards. For sharp curves, plant your standards closer together (sometimes as close as 2.5 metres apart) to ensure the pulling force remains evenly distributed across the line.
Always run your wire on the outside radius of the curve. This ensures the tension pulls the wire directly against the solid steel standard rather than pulling it away from the post and popping the tie wires.
Site Safety and Material Removal
Clearing old boundaries requires just as much care as building new ones. Salvage usable rolled wire where possible, but ensure discarded offcuts are safely buried so they do not endanger livestock or personnel.
Handling high strain materials requires strict safety protocols:
- Always wear heavy gauntlet leather welding gloves and protective high boots.
- Never stand directly in line with a wire being tensioned. If a steel strand snaps under pressure, standing on the opposite side of the post will protect you from severe injury.
- Unroll barbed wire straight along the ground; never pull it directly off the side of the reel.
